What we can learn from Magnus? We were saddened by the recent loss of one of the last survivors of television's more gentlemanly age - Magnus Magnusson. The irony of Magnus' immortal line 'I've started so I'll finish', mirroring his own mortal awareness, would have escaped few of our readers. Essentially irreplaceable, the gentle Icelander's humanity always shone through, never dominating the screen nor resorting to gimmicks or cajoling the contestants of Mastermind in any way. Knowledge was honoured for its own sake, rather than for any life-changing material reward. One of his few famous lines 'a round of mixed fortunes' was a piece of wry and elegant understatement. Much can be learnt - much.
