News
Big month for 'the Shirl'...
Doing our bit for 'Cheridy'
We were delighted to play our small part in The Grinning Spider Ball proceedings last month. Event organiser and local legend James Serjeant was pleased to report that despite rugbyness taking over the world on the Saturday, over £300 was raised towards Sahel International. Well done to all the acts who took part. We were mightily impressed by the riffage of Emerald Sky, who were on just before us, and will be looking to get them on a Shirley Wed next year.
TopOfTheOx
Shirley will be at the TopOfTheOx awards ceremony at The Carling Academy on Nov 11th. We’ve been nominated for best band and had toyed with spending considerable time writing acceptance speeches just in case, but then we decided to write some great new songs instead. Watch out for the hook-heavy ‘Rock n Roll Dancer’ soon to be unleashed on the live circuit.
Heavy Love Video
This month we’re shooting the video for Heavy Love with the help of Gabriel Cocozza and crew. This promises to be an intriguing day, which could get a bit dangerous at times !
272 Records
We’re happy to announce ‘Heavy Love’ will definitely be appearing on The Powerpop Overthrow compilation album. We’ll let you know release details as soon as we get them.
It could be You!
This month’s lucky winner of the Shirley prizedraw is Julia Challenger
Remember you’ve got to be in it (or on it) to win it. Everyone on our mailing list gets automatically entered each month, so don’t be silly, sign up today. (www.shirleymusic.co.uk)
A lot of People have been asking us...
What the biggest source of frustration is for the band. Frustration isn’t an emotion we like to devote too much energy too, but when pressed we’d have to admit that limb limitation is becoming a bit of an issue for us. Shirley fans will be well aware of our penchant for claps and finger clicks (we’ve also been dabbling of late in rehearsal with shakers). Unfortunately we’ve yet to devise a solution for covering the need to simultaneously add these all-important percussive colourings while playing our guitars. (Finger clicks are less of an issue as we usually only use them during quieter passages of play). An obvious solution to the clap problem would be to have an extra pair of arms, but our research has hit a wall on this idea. We did make tentative enquiries regarding stem-cell generation but felt the consultant we met was a bit shady and we didn’t have quite enough in the band kitty. Employing a full-time clapper hasn’t worked out either with RSI complications arising on a regular basis (Toby we’re sure you’ll be able to return to your typing job soon – we wish you well). Johnny’s been working on changing his bass-playing style ‘I’ve been turning my amp up to 11 and working on my left hand strength to get my hammer-ons and pull-offs up to scratch, but that only frees up one hand, so beyond it being an interesting contemplation subject of meditation, it hasn’t really helped’ Perhaps after generations of Shirley off-spring there may one day appear on this planet the perfectly evolved Shirley muso with 4 arms happily a-flailing. We would recommend that the top arms be used for clapping as this will allow for overhead claps as well as into the mike. Cheers.
