News

A good idea is a good idea for ever
Inundated with a wave of dismay since the end of our ‘Shirley Wed’ nights we have succumbed and indeed are delighted to announce that from the ashes of the aforementioned shall rise the phoenix known as ‘Shirley Nights @ The Jericho’. Regulars of our former residencies will be relieved to learn that the only change of detail is the night of the week. Based on availability, we’re hoping to run one night a month at The Jericho Tavern in Oxford, either on Sundays or Mondays. Through this medium we’re hoping to offer a softening of the weekend blues or a reduction in the national high levels of illness and depression respectively. With control of the nights we will ensure that the quality of music remains high. You’ll get a fantastic lineup, including a guest band and an acoustic opener. Smart people will take advantage of the half price advance tickets from wegottickets.com, but even at £4 on the night, this remains one of the best value nights of entertainment to be found in Oxfordshire. The Jericho Tavern is a great venue with a stage befitting the auspicious occasion. Proceedings kick off on Mon 20th with acoustic opener Tim Matthews. You’d have to search long and hard to find music with the clarity, emotional honesty and lyrical texture that characterises his music. Following on subtle carnage on a sonic scale from none other than Drunkenstein. We hope to see you there.

Gotta have more Cowbell
Guitar, Bass, Drums, Keys. The foundation of rock music. Occasionally strings are used to give a lush, orchestral feel. But we all know when a song needs that extra oomph, that extra push over the top, there's only one thing that will satisfy: The Cowbell. It's the cymbal's evil third cousin. It's the dark ring that pounds in the back of your brain and lets you know, it's time to rock. The cowbell is an instrument that can't be overused. It should never be underused. Many great rock and roll songs are perfect because the cowbell is used just right. For these very reasons Sanna took off to Bavaria in September, continuing her exploration of the dark, clanging demon.

Nice Touch
We’re expected to get the long awaited remix of ‘Heavy Love’ very shortly, courtesy of leading London-based urban producer Touch.

Choreography
We’re delighted to have our choreographer Petulia back on board after her lengthy absence with RSI. Petulia’s been showing us an exciting new move called the ‘boot flam’ which we’re hoping to work into our live act later this month. A band that moves together, stays together...

It could be You!

This month’s lucky winner of the Shirley prizedraw is Mark Thomas.
Don’t forget everyone on our mailing list gets automatically entered each month, so don’t miss out; make sure you’re signed up. (http://www.shirleymusic.co.uk)

A lot of People have been asking us...

What happened to the September edition of ‘We are Shirley’? Well September was a bit of a non month for us. Band members were away, there were prolonged frustrations in the studio, weird technical goings-on, gigs getting cancelled and the like. It was time to crawl under the tortoise shell in the style of Julian Cope on an unhinged day. Now we’re back, refreshed, eager, with stuff to look forward to and a trip to Basingstoke in the pipeline. Good times indeed.
